PHAT THREADS GALLERY

‘…The only exception to this rule was of course clothes, which had expanded to a size that was now well beyond all purposeful comprehension to anyone, and even skaters began to trip over their ‘excesses of denim flapping in the wind’ and increasingly questioned the sanity of the situation amongst growing concerns of the ‘phat style’ becoming ‘mainstream fashion;’ inevitably, it wouldn’t be long before skaters abandoned the ‘XXXL look’ completely…’ djl

As incredible as it may seem today in an era dominated by ‘skin-tight-alright’ and gym pumps skateboard ‘fashions’ there was a time when skateboarders wore clothes so large and baggy that many considered them to be a complete laughing stock. Indeed, pretty much everywhere ‘phat pants and tiny wheels technical street skateboarders’ went, they were laughed at without fail. And some may forward a justifiable claim that this was completely natural given how ridiculous skateboarders looked in clothing akin to a tent! Nevertheless, before the ‘mainstream market’ did its usual complete fashion u-turn and began to wear ‘phat threads’ many ‘serious’ technical street skateboarders embraced such clothing simply for reasons of function, until ‘the lemmings’ wore them everywhere without understanding exactly why they were hanging in them! Like the ‘pants halfway down one’s ass ‘style’ today. This is simply a consequence of what happens to sweaty skateboarders after sessioning for hours, not a ‘style’ as many lemmings believe and now replicate; how funny!

Here I’ve listed just a sample of my original ‘phat threads’ that were indeed excellent to technical street skate in given the manoeuvrability they afforded. You can still find me in them sometimes today, despite the sniggering and gawps of many! Will we ever see another ‘phat pants and tiny wheel era’ in skateboarding? And even if we do, it surely can’t be as Rad as the original era; after-all, we seem to have forgotten how to make legit, flat cave, early nineties football slicks! If I had the money, I’d make them myself (but without slapping deep modern concaves in the mould).
